Did you know that the State Labor Government is not constructing the railway extension to Mernda until 2027? According to their ‘North East Integrated Transport Study 2007’, this vitally needed infrastructure has been put on the backburner indefinitely by Premier John Brumby and his team
The graph above shows the City of Whittlesea growth forecast for the suburbs of Mernda and Doreen. As you can see, the population will rise from approximately 10,000 in 2010 to 20,000 by 2014 and 40,000 by 2027 – the year that the Brumby Government deems we shall receive our rail extension. This timeline is completely unreasonable and unacceptable considering the amount of traffic congestion already on Plenty Road and the amount of Stamp Duty the State Government is receiving from the residents of this area through new housing developments
Even sadder still is that the 2027 deadline occured under the representation of Danielle Green, MP for Yan Yean who has represented us since 2002. Although Ms Green has said in the Media that she supports the Mernda extension being brought forward, she has never stated when she believes the Mernda Railway extension should be completed by.
The South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance are campaigning for the Mernda Railway extension to be constructed by the year 2014. Our request is a reasonable one in light of the fact it will need to be built within the next term of Government for Victoria and by that year the population will have risen from 10,000 to 20,000 residents
We therefore ask that Ms Green in response to overwhelming public support for this extension, do what her electorate is asking for and fully and openly support this extension project by naming a completion date. The overwhelming silence that haunted the South Morang extension project will not be tolerated again on the Mernda extension. Ms Green, PLEASE DO AS WE ASK and do what you were elected to do in listening to and backing up your electorate on this issue.
